SPANISH FORK — Team captain Amanda Naylor drove in a three-run homer over the center-field fence to give Manti a 16-6 win over Enterprise in five innings of the Class 2A state softball championship Saturday in Spanish Fork.
“I knew we had the potential to be great,” Naylor said. “But it was our duty to show that potential to ourselves. As the year went on, I knew we had the best shot as a team.”
Leadoff hitter Mikaela Cox crushed the first pitch of the game for a home run, and the Templars (16-3) rolled to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
But Enterprise responded in the second to cut the lead to 4-2 before Naylor helped Manti eventually build up a 9-3 advantage through four innings.
Enterprise’s Halle Drake belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-6, but the Wolves could get no closer as the Templars rolled to their 20th-straight win.
2A baseball
At Dixie State, North Sevier knew it had to knock off Enterprise twice in Saturday’s 2A baseball championship in St. George by virtue of coming through the loser’s bracket.
It nearly happened — but the Wolves survived.
North Sevier took the first game 9-4, but Enterprise took the second matchup — the third meeting between the two squads in two days — and the state title with a 13-11 win Saturday.
Enterprise won its 11th state championship, the second-most in state history behind 5A Bingham.
