The BYU Cougars picked up a big 6-3 win at home Friday night over the Utah State Aggies. Here are some initial thoughts after tonight's game...
That game was not pleasing to the eye. Even though both teams have superb defenses, I thought more points would be put on the board. There was never really a flow all night long.
For the second week in a row, BYU started Taysom Hill at the quarterback spot. The difference this week is that BYU faced a much better defense. Hill was not able to produce the same big plays as last week, but his numbers were still impressive. Hill ended the night with 235 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception. Hill also rushed for 80 yards on 19 carries.
The Cougar offensive line suffered a loss before the game started. Famika Anae was informed before kick-off that he would not be medically cleared to play. His career is over due to numerous injuries. The O-line played OK, but they still had issues with false start and holding penalties.
The BYU defense had to deal with multiple looks from the Aggie offense, and I thought the Cougars did a good job of adjusting on the fly. Keeton had moments where he was able to pick up some yards, but the defense kept him from making the big play. The fact the Kerwynn Willams was only able to pick up 18 yards rushing and 39 yards receiving is a great indication on just how good the defense played. In fact, Utah State was held to roughly 200 yards less than their season average.
The kicking game was an issue tonight. Sorensen had a field goal blocked and Stephenson missed an extra point. In the end, it didn't cost BYU the game, but the kicking issues have to be addressed. BYU has missed three PATs in the last two games.
