This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

When you ask Jay Broadbent, CEO of Alpine Home Medical Equipment, why he started his own home medical business, he'll tell you it's because he needed a job. What he probably didn't envision at the time is how he'd be operating in two states with 10 locations through Utah and an office in Idaho Falls, Idaho with the headquarters in Draper. Each location has a retail operation for patients and families to have easy access to supplies.

Jay started into the business working for a small home medical business. He left after a few years and came on as a partner with another home health and nursing company. This is where Alpine Home Medical Equipment started 18 years ago. After six years they decided to split the business. Jay kept the home medical side while his former partners focused on nursing and hospice care. And Alpine Home Medical continues to grow, now with some of his children possibly coming on board.

Alpine Home Medical Equipment provides home medical equipment so someone can recover at home with the same setup as what they'd have in a hospital. They provide home oxygen, wheelchairs, hospital beds and even machines for sleep therapy. This is a more cost effective form of healthcare than staying in the hospital or a rehab center. Not to mention, studies have shown that patients heal at home faster than they do in a hospital.

Jay says this is a competitive business, so it's important to understand the industry to successfully navigate it. Alpine Home Medical distinguishes themselves with a focus on taking great care of patients. Sometimes this means having the ability to read a situation to have sensitivity for the patient's needs. It's not uncommon for Jay to get letters and emails from patients complimenting the Alpine Home Medical Equipment team for their service and courtesy to the families they're serving especially during a time of great need.
