This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Have you ever considered the amount of our food supply affected by honeybees? According to the National Resources Defense Council, with offices across the U.S., more than $15 billion worth of crops are pollinated by bees in the United States alone. In other words, one of every three bites of food Americans consume comes from a plant that requires pollenization.

Other beekeepers have also experienced similar losses, and some have actually gone out of business. One beekeeper even brought in seven diesel loads of sugar, just to keep his hives developing.

However, Gary says Dutson Honey, like many others, has been turned on to essential oils. They're using nature to treat nature like lemongrass, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, sweet orange oil and menthol. One beekeeper that used essential oils about four times during the year only lost a small part of his hives. Others have seen a mixture of fat, sugar and lemongrass oil be very successful.

Despite the challenges, Gary, his wife, Loene, (low-een) and his nephew Chris Dutson continue to produce the sweet clover honey Dutson Honey has always been known for. They take their bees to California every winter to pollinate the almond orchards. The bees have a warm climate to winter in, and the orchards are successfully pollinated.

It's important that the farming community continues to support beekeepers by not spraying their crops when they're in bloom because that can present a danger to the bees. It's not easy, but Gary plans to continue his legacy of beekeeping at Dutson Honey.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
