SALT LAKE CITY — A week after a report that Utah men's basketball 2020 signee Caleb Lohner wanted out of his national letter of intent, the university has granted him a full release.
Lohner, a Wasatch Academy product, was part of a four-person recruiting class to sign his NLI in November as part of the NCAA's signing period.
Lohner held offers from several Power Five programs but chose Utah last fall as part of the university's best-ever recruiting class under head coach Larry Krystkowiak. He joined four-star guard Ian Martinez, combo guard Pelle Larsson and shooting guard Mason Falslev.
“We are obviously very disappointed in Caleb’s recent decision requesting a release from his NLI," Krystkowiak said in a prepared statement Monday. "However, we will honor his wishes and turn our focus towards the motivated, talented and connected players and coaches that are committed to our program.
"We look forward to getting back on the court together this fall and return to prominence within the Pac-12.”
Lohner is expected to sign with Utah's rival BYU, though nothing has been made official.
Utah recently saw starting guard Both Gach enter the NBA draft process, but he later declared his intent to move on from the university should he not continue his pursuits of a professional career.
Minutes after Utah announced its release of Lohner, Gach tweeted his decision to play for Minnesota.
