WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump won't be watching from inside the chamber or on TV from the White House when his historic impeachment trial reconvenes in the Senate this week. Instead, Trump will be thousands of miles away at the Davos economic forum in the Swiss Alps, trying to charm global CEOs over dinner when the trial is called to order on Tuesday. The president's participation in the annual World Economic Forum in Switzerland will test his ability to balance his anger over being impeached with a desire to project leadership on the world stage.
BEIJING (AP) — Authorities say a fourth person has died in an outbreak of a new coronavirus in China, as more places stepped up medical screening of travelers from the country as it enters its busiest travel period. The increased control measures followed a sharp rise in the number of infections to more than 200, with epidemiologists still uncertain of its nature and mode of transmission. Chinese health authorities confirmed that some cases had been transmitted person-to-person, a development that means the illness could spread faster and more widely, particularly at the start of the Lunar New Year travel rush.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Vatican has ordered an investigation of a sexual abuse allegation against a Brooklyn bishop who was previously named by Pope Francis to investigate the church's response to clergy sexual abuse in Buffalo. The Archdiocese of New York says Cardinal Timothy Dolan received instructions on Jan. 7 to begin an investigation of allegations that Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio molested a child while he was a priest in New Jersey in the mid-1970s. DiMarzio has denied the allegation. An attorney notified church officials in November that he was preparing a lawsuit on behalf of the alleged victim. Pope Francis tapped DiMarzio in October to investigate the Buffalo Diocese's response to clergy sexual abuse.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Leaders in Davenport, Iowa, are condemning a snow display depicting a figure gunning down a snowman wearing a Bernie Sanders shirt and another adorned with a Democratic Party hat. Davenport Mayor Mike Matson said Monday he's asked the police chief to investigate the display, noting “all hate speech is wrong.” Homeowner Donald Hesseltine laughed off such concerns. He says he created the display over the weekend to “mess with” friends who support Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president. The display includes a mannequin topped with a military helmet that is holding a rifle and chainsaw. The rifle is pointed toward the Sanders snowman, which has red-dyed snow near its head.
CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico (AP) — Hundreds of Central American migrants have waded across the Suchiate River into southern Mexico in a new test of U.S. President Donald Trump's Central America strategy to keep them away from the U.S. border. Some scuffled with national guardsmen on the riverbank Monday while others slipped through Mexican lines and trudged off on a rural highway in small groups. Immigration authorities nabbed more there and chased others into the brush. Most, however, remain at the river's edge or standing in its muddy waters trying to decide what to do next, after being blocked from crossing en masse over a border bridge between Guatemala and Mexico.
