WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is threatening once more to end required payments to insurance companies unless lawmakers repeal and replace the existing health law. Trump tweets: "If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!" The subsidies are estimated at $7 billion a year and help reduce costs such as deductibles for people with low incomes.
NEW YORK (AP) — Conservatives across the U.S. are warning Republicans in Congress not to drop their effort to repeal the health care law they deride as "Obamacare." The most recent failure of lawmakers to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law has prompted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to say that "it's time to move on." But local party leaders and others who make up the conservative base of the GOP predict payback for Republicans lawmakers if they don't revive the fight.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House gets a new chief of staff on Monday. In the latest Trump administration shakeup, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, who's been serving as Homeland Security secretary, will assume the powerful position. Kelly retired from the military last year, wrapping up a three-year post as head of U.S. Southern Command. He replaces Reince Priebus, the former Republican National Committee leader dismissed as chief of staff by President Donald Trump.
UNDATED (AP) — A "steady stream" of tourists left a North Carolina island Saturday under evacuation orders prompted by a widespread power outage, wiping out a significant chunk of the lucrative summer months for local businesses. It could take days or weeks to repair an underground transmission line damaged early Thursday by construction crews. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, North Carolina ferries had evacuated about 3,800 people from both Ocracoke and Hatteras islands, according to Gov. Roy Cooper's office.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia's prime minister says police have disrupted a plot to bring down an airplane and arrested four men in several Sydney suburbs. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says security has been increased at Sydney Airport since Thursday and similar measures were extended to all major international and domestic terminals around Australia overnight. Seven Network television reported that 40 riot squad officers stormed an inner-Sydney house before an explosives team found a suspicious device.
