TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Three masked gunmen have robbed an armored car at Tirana International Airport despite increased security following the suicide bombing in Istanbul earlier this week.
Police said the robbers illegally entered the takeoff area Thursday afternoon by breaking through the fence surrounding the airport. The robbery occurred about 2:45 p.m. as the car belonging to a private security company was headed toward a plane to drop cash. No details were available on how much money was stolen
The robbers, who were said to have escaped with several bags of cash, left using the same route they used to get to the armored car. Police found a burned-out Mercedes they believe was used by the robbers.
Police along with special troops and helicopters were searching the area around the airport.
