SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) — A city near Salt Lake City is starting an ambitious effort to create a master-planned downtown, beginning with a supermarket and residential units near a busy highway and transit crossroads.
South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood said Monday the $45 million project will remake a largely industrial 235-acre area in the heart of the city.
Wood tells reporters the site has a great location near interstates 15 and 80, busy surface streets, and the Utah Transit Sugar House Streetcar line.
A WinCo Foods grocery store is expected to help draw people to the area when it opens for business around Thanksgiving.
Plans call for 2,500 multifamily housing units, millions of square feet of storefronts, offices and commercial space, and parks, a greenway and a connection to the Parley's Trail bikeway.
