MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — When one of Angie Schmehl's identical twins, born at 26 weeks, died after 16 days of life, she didn't expect to be hounded by the state about picking a pediatrician for him and threats to cut off his insurance.
Now Vermont state officials are apologizing that that's happened.
Schmehl's twins James and Ronan both had medical problems when they were delivered by C-section July 10, 2015. Ronan died 16 days later.
Television station WCAX reports that Schmehl has continued to receive notices from Vermont Health Connect, the state health insurance that she needs to pick a pediatrician for her late baby, and threatening to cut off his insurance.
Lawrence Miller, a senior health care aide to Gov. Peter Shumlin, is apologizing, He says there are explanations, but no good excuse.
