LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Organ donor statuses on Nebraska driver's licenses will remain in effect until a citizen asks to change it.
Gov. Pete Ricketts signed a measure Thursday to change current state law, which requires license holders to update the status whenever they renew their license.
The measure is designed to encourage more drivers to be listed as donors.
State lawmakers battled to resolve a dispute over the initial proposal, which would require drivers to answer yes or no to whether they want to be listed as a donor. Opponents say the government shouldn't force citizens to answer a question at the request of Nebraska's nonprofit donor registry.
The new law will still allow residents to opt out of answering the question.
