CHICAGO (AP) — The Skokie Democrat who sponsored Illinois' medical marijuana legislation is praising state officials and Gov. Pat Quinn for moving deliberately on regulations for the program.
Rules approved Tuesday mean would-be growers and retailers can soon apply for permits. The first legal marijuana could be sold sometime next year.
The sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Lou Lang, says some patients have been anxious about the pace. But Lang thinks it's been reasonable. He credits "an involved governor's office" for getting rules approved in slightly more than six months after the law took effect.
Medical cannabis program coordinator Bob Morgan says interested patients should start talking with their doctors about the program. The Illinois State Medical Society is helping its members learn about the law and the medical uses of marijuana.
