CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — An ROTC student at Widener University in eastern Pennsylvania is being treated for viral meningitis, a less-serious strain that isn't linked to an outbreak of bacterial meningitis at Princeton University in New Jersey that is being blamed in the death of a Pennsylvania student.
Viral meningitis is less severe than bacterial meningitis, though both cause inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
A student at Drexel University in Philadelphia died of bacterial meningitis March 10 after she had close contact with some Princeton students about a week before getting sick.
The Delaware County Times (http://bit.ly/1ip2Ozt ) reports there are no other reported cases of meningitis at Widener, which is located in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester. Students, faculty and staff have been notified by email.
