FORT WORTH, Texas — Tony Finau’s final round at the Charles Schwab Challenge started off about as well as can be expected Sunday at Colonial Country Club.
By the end of the day, he proved he’s still a top-25 golfer on tour — even after more than two months without competitive golf.
Finau shot 2-under-par 68 Sunday — his fourth-straight round below 70 to finish tied for 23rd with 8-under 272 in the four-day event.
The Rose Park native and West High graduate took birdies on the first three holes of Sunday’s round, and added another on the par-3, 185-yard 16th hole to add to a pair of back-nine bogeys in the finish.
Finau, who recently moved to Arizona, finished tied for 23rd with Lucas Glover, Viktor Hovland, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Brian Harman and Chesson Hadley in the finish.
Daniel Berger shot a four-day total of 15-under 265 to win the PGA’s first event since the tour’s hiatus related to the coronavirus pandemic. The 27 year old went up-and-down from the rough just off the green on the par-4 17th hole in the first playoff hole against Collin Morikawa to clinch his third PGA Tour victory.
Golfers called the increased hygiene and social distancing measures at the tournament “odd,” “obviously different” and “certainly awkward,” but agreed it was good to be back on the course.
The resumption of Tour activity included a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. in honor of George Floyd, the black man who died in Minneapolis; video shows a police officer kneeling on the back of his neck for almost 9 minutes, which set off nationwide protests for police reform.
Former Fremont High and BYU golfer Zac Blair shot 1-under 279 to finish tied for 55th.
