CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The northeast Ohio school district that will own a rebuilt stadium next to the Pro Football Hall of Fame has approved renaming the facility for project donor and New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson.
The Repository (http://bit.ly/1xdhKeL ) reports the Canton school board on Monday signed off on calling the facility Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Benson is donating $10 million toward rebuilding the current Fawcett Stadium and $1 million toward other parts of a related development plan at the hall.
A few people raised concerns about replacing the name of the late Canton businessman John A. Fawcett with that of someone who has little connection to the city. Mayor William Healy II says the school board's resolution still calls for displays honoring Fawcett in the stadium and the hall.
