AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Defending champ Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) has picked up where he left off last year as he opened with a 6-under-66, good for a two-shot lead after the first round of the Masters. New Zealand's Danny Lee and Shane Lwry are tied for second. Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia are among those three shots off the lead.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Rory McIlroy needs to win the Masters to complete a career Grand Slam. McIlroy was going along smoothly but bogeyed three of his final four holes to finish 2-under 70, four shots off the lead.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP)— Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit the ceremonial first tee shots to officially open the 80th Masters at Augusta National Golf Club. But the warmest applause was reserved for Arnold Palmer, the 86-year-old honorary starter who didn't even hit a shot but is still considered the King by the Augusta patrons.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hunter Pence hit a grand slam in the eighth, Joe Panik drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants won their home opener by beating the arch-rival L.A. Dodgers 12-6. Dodgers pitchers had blanked San Diego in their first three games but had their 31-inning scoreless streak to start the season end in the fifth, one inning shy of the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals' record to begin a year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)— Jake Gardiner scored a power-play goal at 2:51 of overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia. The Flyers fell a point behind Boston and Detroit for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. But Philadelphia would secure a playoff berth by winning its last two games.
