NEW YORK (AP) — The two-time defending women's champion at the U.S. Open starts defense of her title tonight. Top-seed Serena Williams has a match this evening with fellow American Taylor Townsend. The 18-year-old Townsend is a student at the University of Virginia. In action this afternoon, eighth-seed Ana Ivanovic (ee-VAH'-noh-vich) defeated Alison Riske of the U.S., 6-3, 6-0.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Baseball has several pitchers that have won 15 games, but no 16-game winners. That could change tonight as Cincinnati's ace, Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh), goes for his 16th win against seven defeats. Cueto has racked up the 15 victories with an outstanding earned run average of 2.20.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants left guard Geoff Schwartz is out indefinitely with a dislocated right big toe. He'll be in a walking boot for a week to 10 days and the coaches will evaluate his status weekly. Schwartz was hurt in Friday's exhibition game with the Jets.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have made a change in their depth chart. Thad Lewis has been dropped as a backup quarterback and Jordan Palmer has been added. The release of Lewis is somewhat of a surprise after he went 2-3 last year while filling in for injured rookie starter EJ Manuel.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks have re-signed forward Mike Scott. He was a second round pick out of Virginia in 2012 and improved his 3-point shooting last season when he averaged 9.6 points last season, up from 4.6 as a rookie.
