PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh sophomore guard Josh Newkirk underwent left knee surgery on Wednesday but should be ready in time for the 2015-16 season.
Coach Jamie Dixon says the surgery repaired the lateral meniscus and a microfracture in the knee. Newkirk will need four to six months to recover, though Dixon said he believes Newkirk will be fine by the time practice starts in the fall.
Newkirk 5.9 points, 2.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds in 34 games for the Panthers last season but struggled to play with any consistency. His playing time and production tailed off toward the end of the year as Pitt went 19-15 and missed the NCAA tournament for just the second time in Dixon's 12-year tenure.
