MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been released from a jail in Texas, where he faces charges that he used a switch to spank one of his sons. A jail records official says Peterson turned himself in early today and was released after processing. The Vikings say Peterson won't play in the team's home opener tomorrow against the New England Patriots.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — No. 6 Georgia opens SEC play against 24th-ranked South Carolina in a meeting of expected contenders for the conference's Eastern Division title. The Bulldogs started the season with an impressive 24-point win over Clemson, while the Gamecocks were staggered by a 24-point loss to Texas A&M.

UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Florida State has the week off and the next two ranked teams are heavily favored to win their match-ups today. Second-ranked Oregon meets Wyoming in a battle of 2-0 teams. The Ducks are favored by more than six touchdowns. No. 3 Alabama is a heavy favorite against visiting Southern Mississippi.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Orioles take a season-high six-game winning streak into their game with the Yankees this afternoon. Baltimore has a magic number of five to clinch the American League East title.

ATLANTA (AP) — Billy Horschel takes a two-shot lead into today's third round of the Tour Championship as he eyes the $10 million bonus that goes to the FedEx Cup winner. Horschel entered the tournament in second place in the FedEx Cup standings behind Chris Kirk, who is tied with Rory McIlroy and Jason day for second in the tournament.
