KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — The NCAA has placed Kalamazoo College in western Michigan on three years' probation for violations involving the awarding of financial aid to athletes, recruiting practices and failure to monitor financial aid regulations.
MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/1pyB3fQ ) Wednesday that the NCAA investigation began in 2014.
The NCAA says Kalamazoo College used a matrix rating system that considered athletics participation in admissions, but did not exclude those ratings when determining financial aid packages.
It also says the school's baseball coach told some recruits in emails that the admission's office would "increase merit-based financial aid upon his written recommendation."
Punishment also includes a postseason competition ban that the school says it intends to appeal.
Kalamazoo College says that it corrected the financial aid process once the school was made aware of the infractions.
