DETROIT (AP) — J.D. Martinez of the Detroit Tigers has hit the first home run of the 2015 baseball season.

Martinez's drive off Minnesota's Phil Hughes in the second inning Monday cleared the wall in right-center field at Detroit's Comerica Park, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Detroit's Alex Avila added a two-run shot later in the inning.

This season began Sunday night when St. Louis beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0, but nobody homered in that game.

Martinez hit .315 with 23 homers and 76 RBIs for the Tigers in 2014. On opening day last year, Martinez was not even in the majors. The Tigers had signed him to a minor league deal in March, and they did not bring him up until the latter part of April.
