CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Alex Ross extended a school record and Bruce Mapp tied another in leading Coastal Carolina to a 31-16 victory over The Citadel Saturday night in a season opener.

Ross completed 24 of 32 passes for 263 yards and extended his own record by throwing for at least one score in 15 consecutive games. His touchdown pass went to Mapp, who tied a record with 10 catches, good for 108 yards.

The Chanticleers, who reached the FCS quarterfinals last season, took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on short scoring runs by De'Angelo Henderson and Aaron Aiken and led by 25 points early in the fourth quarter after Andre Johnson's 1-yard run. Coastal Carolina had 170 yards rushing.

The Bulldogs, under new coach Mike Houston, rushed for 358 yards, throwing just eight passes and completing one. Tyler Renew ran for 137 yards and a touchdown, and Jake Stenson added 120.
