SALT LAKE CITY — Since losing their second game of the season against Pleasant Grove, Timpview has been nearly perfect.

The T-Birds were on an 11-game win streak going into Thursday's semifinal game against Woods Cross, having outscored their opponents 450-104 since that lone-loss to the P.G.

Woods Cross is having their best season since 1989. That was the last time the Wildcats were in the state semifinals.

However, stopping the reigning 4A state champion would prove to be an incredibly difficult task.

Timpview quarterback Britain Covey and running back Kendall Tu'ua make up one of the best tandems in the state. Tu'ua is a 1,000-yard rusher with 13 touchdowns. Covey has completed over 70 percent of his passes that have led to 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. Covey has also rushed for 1,179 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The first score of the game was a short 2-yard pass from Covey to Tu'ua to give the T-Birds the early 7-0 lead.

Special team scored in the second quarter. Woods Cross mishandled the snap on a punt and Timpview's Gabe Reid recovered the fumble in the end zone to take the 13-0 lead.

Braxton Gunter, Woods Cross' leading rusher, scored on a 19-yard run to cut the Timpview lead to 20-6, but that was the only scoring that the Wildcats could scratch out.

In the third quarter, Covey added to his big day by scrambling from sideline-to-sideline to find Rhett VanLeeuwen for the touchdown. Covey finished the day with 204 yards passing, while completing 21-26 passes for a pair of touchdowns and a rare interception. That score gave Timpview a more than comfortable 24-point lead, 30-6.

Kendall Tu'ua scored the final points of the game on a short 6-yard run. Tu'ua finished with 33 yards on 16 carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Timpview will play East, next Friday at 11:00 a.m., at Rice-Eccles Stadium for the 4A state championship.
