DEWEYVILLE, Texas (AP) — School has been canceled this week in a Southeast Texas town inundated by flooding after early-March storms.
A Deweyville Independent School District statement says schools would be closed Monday through Friday for all students and staff.
Superintendent Kevin Clark says the number one concern continues to be the health and safety of students.
School was canceled March 10-11 in Deweyville amid the severe weather. Heavy rain and releases from the Toledo Bend Reservoir led to flooding of the nearby Sabine (suh-BEEN') River. Much of Deweyville was evacuated March 12.
Students in Deweyville, a town of about 1,000 located 100 miles northeast of Houston, were on spring break last week.
Deweyville is in Newton County, which over the weekend was declared a federal disaster area — along with Orange and Jasper counties.
