LAKE CITY, Iowa (AP) — Workers are making repairs to a tornado-damaged high school in Lake City with the goal of having the building ready for students by late summer.
Repairs to the South Central Calhoun High School are ongoing after school board members approved additional bids Thursday for remodeling work, The Messenger (http://bit.ly/1IhziZf ) reported.
The approved bids, which total more than $242,000, were for work on the school's phone system, cabinets and counters, ceiling tiles and drywall repair. The board previously approved a $745,000 bid from Precision Roofing of Lee's Summit, Missouri, for roofing work.
All of the ceiling tiles that were damaged by water will have to be replaced, and the new tiles that'll be installed will be humidity resistant, said Kevin Istas, vice president of reconstruction services for ServiceMaster Recovery Management. He also said the drywall repairs also will include scraping off loose plaster.
"We just don't want any of that plaster falling in six months and whacking somebody on the head," Istas said.
No one was hurt in last month's EF-1 tornado that ripped off the school's roof and caused water damage inside the building.
Repairs on the structure are expected to finish by Aug. 24.
