OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Occupy Oakland protesters have reached a settlement with the Northern California city and Alameda County to resolve a federal lawsuit alleging that scores of arrests during a violent protest three years ago violated their civil rights.
The Oakland Tribune reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/1C0gFa7 ) that the 360 protesters taken to county-run jails following a mass arrest on Jan. 28, 2012, stand to share a $1.36 million settlement.
A federal magistrate last week tentatively approved the deal. The class-action suit claimed protesters were held in cold, overcrowded cells, denied hygiene products and subjected to inadequate sanitary facilities. Protesters were jailed for 12 to 85 hours, but none of them was charged.
The settlement, which must be approved by the City Council, would resolve Oakland's last major Occupy-related lawsuit.
