MOAB, Utah (AP) — A Nevada man was killed when he was struck by an off-road vehicle during a Utah event featuring an extreme form of driving known as rock crawling.
San Juan County sheriff's deputies say 30-year-old Christopher Hower of Ely was photographing the competition when a four-wheel-drive vehicle went off a jump and hit him.
Investigators say he was in an unauthorized area of the track when the accident occurred Saturday afternoon in the Black Ridge area, about 15 miles south of Moab.
The annual event is staged by owners of the property where it takes place.
Rock crawling events involve slow-speed, precise driving over boulders, rock piles and other obstacles.
