SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State Sen. Alvin Jackson is planning to resign from the Legislature to move closer to family.
Jackson tells KUTV of Salt Lake City (http://bit.ly/1j0TIxp) that he will step down after the session ends in March 2016.
The Republican from Highland will leave before his term is over.
Jackson says he and his family will move to Virginia to be closer to his parents, who live in the Washington, D.C., area. In addition, his 17-year-old son will be playing for Duke University's basketball team next season.
A business development consultant, Jackson was chosen by the Republican Party last year to replace Sen. John Valentine after he became chair of the Utah State Tax Commission.
A special election will take place sometime next year to fill Jackson's seat.
