SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed Highland business consultant Al Jackson to fill a vacant state Senate seat.

Herbert's office announced the appointment Monday afternoon after Jackson was selected by Utah County Republican delegates over the weekend.

He replaces Orem Republican John Valentine, who resigned after he was appointment chairman of the Utah Tax Commission.

Jackson becomes the third black state Senator in Utah history.

Until 2007, Jackson was a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., representing Boeing, Northrop Grumman and other aerospace companies.
