THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Lafourche's online charter school has opened its fifth location in the parish.
The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/1MjSMMM) the new building for the Virtual Academy of Lafourche is at 509 St. Mary Highway in Thibodaux.
The academy started this school year with 475 students, up from 111 in 2012. The Lafourche Parish School Board recently approved capping the school's enrollment at 500 students.
Director Julie Bourgeois says she hasn't ruled out asking for an increase when the academy negotiates its charter with the board next year.
The free public charter school rents its curriculum from eLearning and blends online classes with about eight hours of in-person tutoring and guidance a week.
