NEW YORK (AP) — The state comptroller says New York City failed to report hundreds of violent public school incidents to the state as required by law.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says an audit by his office looked at 10 schools, two in each borough, during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.
It found the Department of Education did not report more than 400 incidents.
The annual reports are used to calculate the so-called Schools Violence Index. The audit found that 126 of the episodes were defined as violent. They included assault, sexual offenses and weapons possession.
The state uses the reports to determine whether a school needs a special safety plan.
The DOE says the audit made mistaken assumptions about the reporting process.
DiNapoli says the agency has agreed with most of its recommendations.
