By now, it's no secret that Utah has earned a national reputation as one of the best places in the country to start and grow a business. Year after year, it's at or near the top of the rankings.

But behind many successful small businesses is something equally important: a strong support system.

From free business advising and mentorship programs to startup incubators and veteran-focused resources, Utah is home to a growing network of organizations dedicated to helping entrepreneurs of all kinds succeed.

During National Small Business Month, business leaders across the state are highlighting the essential role small businesses play in Utah's economy — and the resources available to help them thrive.

"Small businesses are economic engines that create jobs, stimulate innovation and contribute to our local prosperity. They offer unique products, services, experiences and solutions. They sponsor local events, sports teams and charities.

They know their customers and create a sense of belonging and camaraderie that strengthens the social fabric of our communities.

The benefit of supporting small businesses goes on, and on," said Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber and Utah Chamber. "And in these small businesses, we have seen firsthand the profound impact they have on our local economy."

For entrepreneurs with an idea — or business owners looking to grow — here are some of the key organizations helping power Utah's small business ecosystem.

Supporting entrepreneurs at every stage

One of the most robust resources for small businesses in the state is the Utah Small Business Development Center Network, commonly known as the Utah SBDC.

With locations throughout Utah, including a major office at Salt Lake Community College's Miller Campus, the organization provides consulting, training and practical guidance for businesses in nearly every industry.

The Utah SBDC helps entrepreneurs with everything from idea validation and business planning to marketing strategies, leadership development and access to capital. Many services are offered at little or no cost, making them especially valuable for startups and small businesses operating with limited budgets.

Another longstanding resource is SCORE, a national nonprofit organization that connects entrepreneurs with experienced volunteer business mentors.

SCORE chapters provide free mentoring and workshops on topics such as accounting, operations, marketing and business scaling. Many Utah entrepreneurs use SCORE and other resources as a sounding board while navigating the early stages of business ownership.

Empowering women-owned businesses

For nearly three decades, the Women's Business Center of Utah has focused on helping entrepreneurs build and grow successful businesses, with a special emphasis on supporting women business owners.

Founded in 1997 as a partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Salt Lake Chamber, the organization offers one-on-one advising, low-cost training programs, mentorship opportunities and networking events open to all entrepreneurs, while tailoring many of its resources to the unique needs of women in business.

The center supports entrepreneurs at every stage, whether they are launching a side business, scaling an established company or learning how to access funding opportunities.

The organization's mission is centered on helping business owners gain the tools, connections and confidence needed to succeed in today's competitive marketplace.

Helping veterans build businesses after service

Utah also offers specialized support for veterans and military families entering the business world.

The Utah Veteran Business Resource Center, or VBRC, was established to help veterans, military members, reservists and military spouses start or grow businesses throughout the state.

The organization provides support similar to other local business programs and partners with national programs, such as Syracuse University's STRIVE initiative, which offers entrepreneurial training for veterans transitioning into civilian careers.

With the VBRC, the mission is simple: "to support all veteran entrepreneurs' business needs."

Building Utah's startup culture

Utah's entrepreneurial ecosystem extends beyond advising and mentorship. Across the state, innovation hubs and startup incubators are helping business leaders collaborate and grow their companies.

One example is The Mill at Salt Lake Community College, an entrepreneurship center that provides workspaces, educational programs, mentorship and startup resources for emerging businesses.

The Mill works closely with entrepreneurs in a variety of industries and often serves as a launching point for startups seeking guidance, connections and community support.

Statewide efforts such as Utah's Startup State initiative also continue to strengthen the entrepreneurial environment by connecting founders with funding opportunities, business development support and innovation-focused programming.

Why small businesses matter

Small businesses do more than create jobs — they help define communities, support local causes, sponsor events, drive innovation and make significant contributions to Utah's economy in a multitude of ways.

During National Small Business Month, Utah's business leaders hope more entrepreneurs will take advantage of the many organizations and programs available to help them succeed.
