Dr. Kim Mulvihill ReportingMen at high risk of developing prostate cancer should undergo aggressive screening for the disease. That is the recommendation following a Fox Chase Cancer Center study.
The study demonstrates that we can find cancer earlier in high-risk men if we use more aggressive screening criteria. Researchers looked at more than five hundred men considered to be at high risk of developing prostate cancer. They found twenty-five percent of those who were diagnosed with the disease had what are considered low PSA levels--that is lower than 2.5. current guidelines.
The lead investigator says men at high risk of prostate cancer are more likely to develop the disease at a younger age. Catching the cancer early before it has spread is critical to curative treatment.
Researchers say more aggressive screening measures, such as biopsies, may be needed for men at high risk of the disease --like those who have a family history of the disease.
