Two number ones! Wow!

Alex Smith, the first pick in the National Football League’s annual draft by the San Francisco Forty-Niners! And Andrew Bogut, the top choice of the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association!

In the world of collegiate athletics, it is difficult to overstate the significance of what these two University of Utah athletes accomplished this year.

Never before has a single university supplied the number one draft pick in both major sports. They didn’t come from one of the nation’s perennial athletic powerhouses ingrained in one of the touted conferences, but from the University of Utah of the Mountain West Conference.

Let it be a lesson to all aspiring athletes that where one plays is only part of the equation. More significant is how one performs once given the opportunity to be part of a team. And it extends beyond the fishbowl of the stadium or court, to include a commitment to long hours of physical and academic preparation in a quest to excel.

KSL congratulates Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut as well as the entire University of Utah athletic program for such an extraordinary year! Top draft picks and championship seasons, not only in football and basketball, but in gymnastics, skiing, volleyball and soccer, as well.

Yes, we say, wow!
