If the past couple of weeks are an indication, our region is in for one whale of a fire season. And with the fireworks season approaching, there is absolute need for common sense in where and how the citizenry celebrates the upcoming patriotic holidays.

KSL especially urges wise and proper use of legal fireworks. At the same time, we express disapproval of those who would endanger their neighbors by discharging any firework that is legally banned.

Utah law is exceptionally clear. Only fireworks specifically approved by the State Fire Marshal, and included on a very detailed “Approved Fireworks List” can be legally sold and discharged in Utah. Sales are limited to June 20 through July 25 and fireworks can only be set off three days before and after July 4 and 24.

We realize enforcement is difficult. As with speeding on a highway, one can generally get away with setting off an illegal bottle rocket or other banned item. But, is it worth the risk, especially this year when the fire danger is as high as it is?

KSL hopes you’ll enjoy the upcoming July holidays with their patriotic flare. Celebrate with enthusiasm and appreciation for this grand land of ours. And, if you choose to use fireworks, we hope you’ll do it legally and safely.
