In a recent editorial, KSL urged the Sierra Club and others to drop their “obstinate” opposition to the Legacy Parkway project through Davis County. Today we offer another viewpoint from Marc Heileson of the Sierra Club.

Here is some of what he wrote: Instead of building the Legacy Highway, the Sierra Club believes that there is a better way. We regret that KSL failed to mention that the Sierra Club and others support the Smart Growth Alternative. We believe that the Smart Growth Alternative is a superior approach to meeting Utah's transportation needs while maintaining our high quality of life and protecting our environment.

The Smart Growth Alternative calls for making a priority of building both light and commuter rail and also includes a second vehicle route through Davis County connecting Highway 89 and I-215. It will provide more transportation choices for citizens by combating our ever growing dependence on the automobile. Los Angeles is living proof that it is impossible to build your way out of congestion through freeway construction. This pattern only encourages more vehicle trips for longer distances, which in turn leads to the rapid filling of new pavement with new congestion.

KSL thanks Marc Heileson for his comments. A more complete text of his response can be found by clicking in the story menu box above.
