General Conferences of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are held as routinely as the advent of the seasons. Another will be held in Salt Lake City this weekend.
Just as it can be easy to take the remarkable worldwide gatherings for granted, some Utahns may overlook the dynamic, yet constant and stabilizing influence the Church’s physical presence provides for the capital city.
In recent months, the Church has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the vitality of its headquarters neighborhood by purchasing the beleaguered Crossroads Mall. A significant and very costly renovation is planned. Nordstrom has been persuaded to stay in the core downtown area. Other nearby office buildings will be remodeled and upgraded. And the Triad Center has been acquired and will be converted into a college campus.
The transactions are all part of an announced strategy by the Church’s real estate arm, Zions Securities Corporation, to invest in and maintain a key section of downtown Salt Lake City.
KSL (which is owned ultimately by the LDS Church) joins the entire community in expressing appreciation for an anchor institution with the vision, commitment and resources to keep the state’s most visible business district vibrant and stable. Like the conferences that occur twice annually, it is something the people of Utah should never take for granted.
