Tomorrow’s precinct caucus meetings play an enormously important role in the election process in Utah. Hopefully, they’ll be well attended! It would be especially significant for those not normally inclined to get involved in partisan politics to attend one of the neighborhood meetings.

A primary purpose of the gatherings is the selection of delegates to the county and state conventions of the major political parties in Utah. Those convention delegates, in turn, will play a major role in selecting their party’s slate of candidates for this year’s elections.

Often, political activists dominate the party caucuses. It seems those who represent narrow special interests or espouse particular ideological views are more inclined to attend the meetings, sometimes at the beckoning of organizations with specific agendas.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It is the way the established system works. Those who mobilize the most voters generally win.

Still, it is worrisome that the views of the mainstream moderate majority aren’t always heard or represented. So, KSL encourages citizens to attend one of tomorrow’s caucus meetings. Get involved! Express your feelings! Perhaps seek election as a convention delegate. At the very least, listen and vote for those who share your views. Become part of this grass roots process that plays such an essential role in Utah politics.
