Today, we’d like to share some replies to several recent KSL editorials.
KSL suggested the nursing shortage in Utah could be eased by expanding training programs. Carol Wood wrote to say the real problem is low wages, not just lack of trained nurses:
"Many Utah educated nurses move out of state after one year of experience. Very few people can support a family (in Utah) on a nurse’s income."
Another editorial voiced support for a Board of Regents decision to specifically define the roles and missions of the state’s ten institutions of higher learning. Stephen Clark said:
"KSL should recognize that simply putting (schools) in their place and defining them a role is nonsense and goes against all principles of competition. Those schools that compete well should be rewarded instead . . ."
In yet another editorial, KSL lamented the negligence of humans in causing many of the wildfires this summer, including one allegedly set intentionally by a mentally ill man. With funding for many mental health programs diminishing, Rebecca Nelson said the blame on human negligence should be extended:
"The almost million dollars spent (fighting) the fire may have helped keep this sad person in a better place than jail."
