For the sake of everyone in Utah, KSL hopes the Main Street Plaza battle is over!
The community had an intense and open debate over the issues involved. The Salt Lake City Council wrestled with it at length and made a good decision. And the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t want to deal with it. So, please, to anyone considering prolonging the agony of the controversy, we say get over it.
As well intentioned as some civil libertarians may be, especially those who are out of state, it is time for them, as Mayor Rocky Anderson wisely suggested, to look around the country for more pressing civil rights issues to pursue.
Besides, to proceed with yet another lawsuit could easily be viewed more as harassment than an honest effort to resolve legitimate legal issues. Consider the words of Mayor Anderson, himself a devout civil libertarian and member of the ACLU, in describing more possible involvement by national ACLU attorneys:
“I think they’re so far off the mark, I think their theories are so far beyond any established law that I wish they would just go away and let us take care of this.”
KSL agrees!
In a few weeks, the locally generated settlement will be finalized. Great things will come of it. There’s simply no justification for extending the debate!
