During an April 22 speech to a secular audience at the University of Denver, President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints identified the problem of the family as "the greatest challenge facing this nation."

The wise 92-year-old religious leader didn’t mince words when he said the problem is "brought on by misguided parents . . . resulting in misguided children." In frank language, he said, "It’s the man and the woman who are responsible for children. And to put it bluntly, too many of them are cop-outs."

He’s right!

With millions of children innocently finding themselves outside the stability of the traditional family setting, long-term generational consequences are brewing.

President Hinckley’s advice demands attention: " . . . strengthen the sense of responsibility and acceptance of the vital truth that fatherhood and motherhood carry with them tremendous and lifelong obligations. Let us begin to teach with increasing sincerity and skill the wondrous beauty of parenthood, the joy of bringing new life into the world and the imperative of guiding and sustaining that life to make it meaningful and productive."

In KSL’s view, President Hinckley’s timely message is a clarion call for action. Responsible parenthood and the preservation of the family are vital if America is to be "not only the military leader but also the moral light of the entire world."
