A new Utah tradition begins today.

Utah Winterfest, as it is called, may not be on the same grand scale and offer the kind of international extravaganza the Olympic Winter Games did a year ago. Still, KSL believes it is a fitting way to keep alive the contagious community spirit generated during 2002 . . . along with reminiscing a bit about all that was accomplished during "the best games ever."

Last year, the world discovered what Utahns have long known. We have a tremendous winter playground. Of course, this year the drought is taking a toll. Still, there’s enough snow in the mountains to hold a world championship event. At Deer Valley today and tomorrow the world’s top freestyle skiers are vying for the title of best in the world. It is the kickoff event for Winterfest.

Through February 9, the party will assume a variety of forms. World-class athletic competition at several venues heads the list. Just as with the Olympics a year ago, though, there’ll be plenty of cultural events to attend and inspiring formal celebrations to join in. For all those volunteers who contributed so immensely to the success of 2002 Games, reunions are scheduled where friendships will be renewed.

So, Utahns, get with it. Join in and support the activities of Utah Winterfest. Rekindle a few of last year’s emotions. Indeed, relight the fire within. And help Winterfest become a meaningful tradition and perpetual legacy of the most stirring 17-days in recent Utah history.
