Salt Lake City Police deserve a pat on the back for not giving up the search for the person who killed ten-year-old Anna Palmer back in 1998.
The little girl's brutal murder disturbed the entire community, yet the case went cold and unresolved until a recent break involving DNA analysis. A 31-year-old man currently in prison in Idaho for another crime against a minor has been identified as the killer.
No one in our society should get away with murder, yet they occasionally do. The list of so-called cold case murders in Utah is uncomfortably long. For a sobering experience, take a look at the cold case list on the website of the Salt Lake City Police Department. The photographs of nearly two dozen murder victims stare you in the face. Go to the website of the Salt Lake County Sheriff and you'll see three dozen more. A number of the cases go back as far at the early 1970's. Other law enforcement agencies throughout Utah can add to the list.
The fact Anna Palmer's case has likely finally been solved offers a degree of hope for the family and friends of other victims that resolution eventually may come. Neither they nor detectives should ever give up the search for answers.
