Press ReleaseLOGAN, Utah -- Following its 85-73 win against Weber State on Dec. 23, Utah State's men's basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 5-1 record against in-state opponents to win the Old Oquirrh Bucket for the second-straight season and ninth time overall.
Utah State¹s other in-state wins this year include victories against Weber State (66-60), Southern Utah (89-49), Brigham Young (71-61) and Utah Valley (87-56), while its only loss was at Utah (68-67).
The Old Oquirrh Bucket (named after the Oquirrh Mountains located to the west of Salt Lake City) is the symbol of in-state basketball supremacy in Utah. Every year since the 1974-75 season the trophy has been awarded to the in-state college team (Brigham Young, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley and Weber State), which has the best winning percentage against in-state competition.
Of Utah State's nine Old Oquirrh Bucket titles, four have come under the direction of current head coach Stew Morrill (2002, 2005, 2009, 2010). USU also won the title three straight years under Rod Tueller (1983, 1984, 1985) and Dutch Belnap's 1975 and 1976 teams won the first two titles in the trophies history.
Utah has won the bucket 14 times, followed by Utah State and BYU with nine victories each, and Weber State with four.
