OGDEN, Utah -- Jerry Bovee, 42, who has spent the past seven weeks serving as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Weber State University on an interim status, will now serve in the position on a permanent basis. The announcement was made by Dr. Norm Tarbox, Vice-President for Administrative Support Services at Weber State University, who also oversees the WSU Athletic Department as part of his duties.
"Jerry Bovee will be a terrific athletic director for Weber State," said Tarbox. "He knows the business, he has the trust of the University community, and has boundless energy. He will be able to quickly build on the solid foundation put in place by Jerry Graybeal."
Before being named to the interim position, Bovee spent the past two years as the Assistant Vice-President for Administrative Support Services. In that role he supervised operations for Academic Services and Athletic Compliance for the Athletic Department. In addition to his athletics department responsibilities, Bovee directed Campus Police, Mail Services, Printing Services, Environmental Health and Safety services, along with overseeing operations at the Dee Events Center and Stewart Stadium.
In 2008 and 2009, Bovee assisted in the completion of a year-long NCAA Re-Certification process for the Wildcats, serving as the chief report writer and liaison to the NCAA Peer Review Team. In addition, he has supervised the initiative to improve the Academic Performance Ratings (APR) for all 16 intercollegiate teams in the WSU Athletics Department.
"This is a great opportunity for me and my family," said Bovee. "It's exciting for me to have the privilege of serving and being involved with our student athletes, coaches and staff. I fondly remember coming to Weber State athletic events as a kid and how exciting it was, but in my wildest dreams I never imagined I would one day have the opportunity to be professionally involved with Wildcat athletics. Weber State is a wonderful place to work and I am thrilled to be part of the team."
Before coming to Weber State, Bovee served as the Assistant Director for the Utah High School Activities Association from 1996 through 2006, where he served as supervisor for football, wrestling, boy's basketball, girl's softball boy's tennis and girl's tennis. His duties included organization and management of state tournaments, coaches and officials education programs, sports rules interpretation and a myriad of other duties related to the administration and governance of sports and activities at the high school level throughout the state of Utah. While at the UHSAA, he served as Vice-Chair of the National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee.
Prior to joining the UHSAA, Bovee worked as Sales and Promotion Specialist, and later as Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions, at Utah State University from 1992 through 1995. In that role, he directed the corporate sales program for Aggie athletics. In addition, he developed group and corporate ticketing plans, in-game promotions and other game management programs.
An Ogden, Utah native, Bovee graduated from Ben Lomond High where he was a member of the Scots football and boy's basketball teams. He attended Utah State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Finance in 1992. Bovee is set to complete a Master's of Business degree from Weber State during the 2010 Spring semester. He and his wife, Julie, are the parents of four children, Jared, Ethan, Addison and Seth
