SALT LAKE CITY -- Thinking of giving out gift cards this holiday season? The Consumer Federation of America says you should read the fine print first.
Steve Brobeck, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America, says, "The most important thing that people who purchase gift cards should be aware of is the expiration date, which in an informal survey that we conducted, we found some expirations dates that were less than 12 months away.
The CFA says consumers should be aware of hidden fees with the cards. For instance, most cards issued by MasterCard, Visa or American Express charge an activation fee of $7, which is taken out of the total the first time the card is used.
