PROVO -- Former NBA player Mark Madsen was hired Friday by the Utah Flash as an assistant coach.

Madsen fills the vacancy left by Dale Osbourne who took a position with the Oklahoma City Thunder and their NBA D-League affiliate the Tulsa 66ers.

"I am very excited about joining the Utah Flash organization," Madsen said. "Not only for opportunity to assist Head Coach Brad Jones and the learn the Utah Jazz system, but also to share my knowledge and experience with the players."

Madsen, 33, comes played in the NBA from 2000 -2009 spending time with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lakers selected Madsen in the first round (29th pick overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft. He contributed to the Lakers' NBA championships in 2001 and 2002.

"We are very excited to have Coach Madsen on our staff," said Team President Joe Brown. "He knows what it takes to win at the highest level, and I know that will translate to success with our team and our players."

Prior to his time in the NBA, Madsen spent four seasons at Stanford University leading the team to four NCAA tournament appearances and a trip to the Final Four. Madsen was a two-time All-American and two-time All-PAC-10.

The Utah Flash begins its season by traveling to play the Tulsa 66ers on Nov. 27.

The Flash home opener is Dec. 7 against the Dakota Wizards at the McKay Events Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
