TOKYO, Jan 22, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The Tokyo art scene welcomed a new national art facility that provides the largest exhibition space in Japan.
The National Art Center, Tokyo, is the first national art institution to be created in 30 years, Kyodo News said. The center is the government's fifth art institution to be organized under the umbrella of the National Museum of Art.
The National Art Center, with 150,694 square feet of exhibit space, is Japan's first national institution without its own permanent collection. In addition to exhibiting touring works, it will provide Japanese art organizations space to exhibit as well, organizers said.
The institute's inaugural showing is "Living in the Material World -- 'Things' in Art of the 20th Century and Beyond."
One of the center's missions will be to promote outreach activities through educational programs, organizers said. In addition, its Art Library will collect and distribute art-related information.
