LONDON, Jan 19, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- British playwright Harold Pinter has received the Legion d'Honneur, one of France's highest awards.
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin presented the award during a ceremony at the French Embassy in London, the BBC said, after meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Pinter, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature, is an outspoken critic of U.S. and British foreign policy and has spoken against the war in Iraq.
His plays include "The Birthday Party" and "Betrayal," and he has written poetry and prose.
Pinter was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2002, but continued to write.
