Many student athletes agonize over how to get the right exposure to be considered for an athletic college scholarship. Receiving an athletic scholarship provides valuable financial assistance, but also makes worthwhile all the years of practice, training and participation on high school sporting teams and it allows the student to continue playing.

Steel Athlete, a Riverton-based company, has introduced an online service designed to help high school and junior college student athletes search for scholarship recruiters across the country. The company matches college coaches with potential student recruits. The service is for men and women and can be used for any sport.

Nick Whatcott and Don Dunn were both high school athletes in Utah. They discovered how frustrating and difficult it was for students and parents to match a college or university to a student's academic and athletic abilities. Their company was organized to simplify the process.

Don told me that there are more opportunities for athletic scholarships available than students and parents realize — especially in lower-profile sports and many women's programs. Steelathlete.com provides an excellent way for student athletes to proactively market themselves to college coaches.

Students can create a profile page and post game film for up to four different sports at steelathlete.com. Coaches can also create a profile page with a user name and login to protect athletes from unauthorized parties accessing their information.

Nick said that the company builds awareness about what's available and how the recruiting process works. Steel Athlete will be offering free recruiting seminars in the hope that parents and students in attendance can gain the necessary knowledge as they embark on the search for a college or university.
